Review:

Loner Dante ‘Danny’ Valentine is a Necromance in futuristic alternate reality. If you like Buffy the Vampire Slayer or are a fan of Laurel K Hamilton’s earlier Anita Blake novels you will really love this one.
Dante Valentine grew up in Rigger Hall; an abusive orphanage never knowing who the parents were that abandoned her in the hospital right after she was born. Only saved from a worse fate as a breeder or to have her psi talent used up and burnt out by the highest bidder she has the rare talent of being a necromance.
During the book we learn a little about the orphanage enough to know about friends loved and lost. Doreen who was Danny’s friend and companion and also had another rare talent as a Sedayaen, a healer. As a healer she was not a fighter and Danny was unable to protect her from Santino, a Mob lord who not only killed and mutilated Doreen but many other psi talents as well.
All these pieces are tied together for us after Japhrimel is sent as an agent of the Devil to bring Danny in for an up close and personal interview and mission. Danny accepts the job, what choice does she have? With the demon Japhrimel assigned as her familiar. The lure is that she learns that the Mafia lord who killed Doreen is really a demon who has stolen something from the Devil. Danny been given Carte blanch to hunt down and kill him.
The hunt leads her and her friends to Nuevo Rio di Janiero and to Jace Monroe the man who helped her pick up the pieces of her life after Doreen’s death and then disappeared from her life
I’m not going to give away all he details but this is a pretty good read as we learn more about the world in Danny’s reality. About her and Jace’s relationship past, present and future or how a demon can ‘fall’ in more ways than one.
I look forward to the next installment in the Dante Valentine Series.
