Weezer's 6th album (3rd self titled) does not disappoint. I personally think it's their best album since "Pinkerton" (though the slick "Make Believe" did have it's moments). This album sounds closer to "The Blue Album" than it does to its immediate predecessor. "Dreamin'" and "Heart Songs" for instance would fit right on that album. Though their first single, "Pork & Beans", has a quirky guitar line very reminiscent of "El Scorcho". I've heard criticism about giving each member a chance to sing, and though it's gimmicky I don't see that as a bad thing. That said, the first half of the album is much stronger than the second half.
The album opens up with "Troublemaker", which works great as a power-pop song but isn't extremely impressive. It's still enjoyable and fits well in the Weezer cataloger, but it's nothing special.
Next is "The Greatest Man That Ever Lived", which I see as among the best Weezer songs ever recorded. I know it's pretentious and not entirely accurate to call it the next "Bohemian Rhapsody", but there are moments where they're definitely channeling Queen. Musically this track is complex and all across the board- no less than 10 genres and it still comes off as perfectly Weezer. This could the best display of River's grasp of musical theory since "Falling For You".
"Pork & Beans" is of course their single. It's a fun song, and up their as a Weezer classic. It's not particularly deep, but it's got that quirky guitar line and the video is amazing. This song probably wouldn't be half of what it is without the video.
"Heart Songs" is a bit like "In the Garage" but it's also a bit schmaltzy. It's a good song, I suppose, but a bit too pop for my taste. The best part is the bridge toward the end when he's talking about Nirvana.
"Everybody Get Dangerous" to me is a lot like "Troublemaker"-- a perfect power-punk song but not much else. But this is probably the most rocking and upbeat song on the album so it has its place.
"Dreamin'" sounds very 1950s to me. It has great harmonies and it's just an overall cool song. It's one of the best on the album.
"Thought I Knew" opens with a drum machine and sounds like a sparse indie song. I like it. It's not quite "Weezer-y" without River's voice, but it's a good song. And catchy.
"Cold Dark World" has been described as a creepy. I'm jaded so I don't think it is. It's dark though. It's cool sounding. It doesn't hook me, but it's a good song.
"Automatic" sounds like a driving song. It's probably the best non-Rivers song, but it's not the catchiest.
"The Angel and the One" is the epic closer... It's sort of like "Only In Dreams" but not quite. I've heard a lot of hype over this song. I understand, it's a good song. It's not really the side of Weezer I like, but it's a worthy closer.
The only bonus track I've heard is "The Weight" and it was great. Kind of funny, but it goes well with River's new mustache.
I would recommend this album to anyone who liked any of Weezer's albums, though it's more centered toward the "Blue" fanbase than the "Make Believe" fanbase.
