Serenity is the movie that grew out of the short-lived TV Show on Fox called Firefly. Apparently Fox did what it does best, and killed a great show. I swear they'd cancel the Simpsons if they could figure out how to make it less popular.
Basically Serenity is the name of the "Firefly" class ship that the show is based upon, or within, however you want to look at it. But Serenity is no Enterprise, and the shows nothing like Star Trek.
Instead, Serenity is a good old fashion Western in a very modern science fiction setting. Lots of people die, lots of great affects, and a superb story.
One thing about the movie though, was that it was more like a short version of the series rather than a continuation of the story already told. So while fans of the TV series will find plenty to like, it's like a more complete version of one story arc in the TV series, than it is covering new ground. So new fans will find the movie easy to like, but long time fans might think it's a bit of a rehash.
