When a young couple scuba-diving on a Caribbean vacation, get stranded at sea with just their scuba gear for comfort, terror unfolds in this incredibly realistic film called OPEN WATER. This movie provides an "un-stylized" portrayal of an extremely frightening situation. The home-video style camera work creates a peek into the private life of this relatively ordinary couple. Reviewers and critics may scoff at the apparent blandness of the film. But since most horrific real-life events never have the luxury of musical score accompaniment, director Chris Kentis, left one out of this story. He approached the plot with enough sensitivity to let the events breathe without creating unnecessary tension. Quite simply, the idea of being left out in the ocean amidst hungry sharks, is terrifying enough. (Do the sharks really have to be eight feet tall to be feared by humans in the open sea?) What’s more, this film is actually based on true events. And the sharks featured in this movie are real ones. In order to soak up the horror, pretend that you’re watching a home movie, and you’ll understand exactly why this independent film is an underrated gem!
