Review:

Glinda Bridgforth, speaking to African American women, offers straight forward advice for reducing debt, investing and building wealth. Bridgforth leads readers through a seven step process that includes the tried-and-true methods such as keeping a spending diary, developing a debt reduction plan and goals setting. What sets this book apart, is the in-depth review of culture and community and its affect on how African American women spend money.

Brigforth shares her own personal experience with money and describes how out of control spending forced her to face debt in excess of $50,000. Her revelation definitely lends credence to the book. As well as, her heartbreakingly accurate discussion about influences around African American women; church, men and family. Her examination of the emotional connection to money isn't eye-opening, but leads to the core of the book: financial health and healing. Likewise, the tools for debt reduction and saving aren't new, but Bridgworth uses these to teach the reader how to cope and overcome the problems that lead to financial ruin. Bridgforth gives readers permission to love and pamper themselves, understanding that for African American women, self appreciation is the key to minimizing problems with money.

This book is a great read for women who want to understand the basics of money. Readers looking for a more extensive review of investing or financial planning will probably be a little disappointed. But Bridgworth's easy, often humorous style may invite them to stick around - even if just for a refresher.
