Shadow Of The Vampire

Independent
I am a huge fan of F.W.Murnau’s Nosferatu. It always lands on my top five movies of all time list (along with Alien, The Exorcist, and a couple others that rotate through). Thus, I was very excited when I saw the first trailer for Shadow of the Vampire many months ago. Unfortunately, as I continued to see the trailer repeatedly I became less enthused. And now that I have experienced the complete film I have very mixed emotions.

Baise Moi (Unrated-2000): The French Movie that was BANNED in France!

Independent
Do not expect an expanded psychological study - or anything particularly "artsy" with this film. It is not artsy. In fact, the film quality is dark and grainy, the dialogue bland, and the acting—typical for low budget films. That being said, this movie is bloody and brutal. The “plot follows a pair of young women who’ve hit rough patches in their lives: one being brutally raped and the other falling into trouble after murdering her own roommate. The pair move on throughout the film, strengthening their friendship via instigating atrocious violent and sexual attacks on various strangers. In short, they make Thelma & Louise look like an episode of "Sesame Street".

Crazy as Hell (R-2002): Eriq LaSalle does Horror???

Independent
Definitely not award winning material--but much much better than I expected... Actor, Michael Beach is relatively believable as a psychiatrist in this horror thriller. Who steals the show, however is Eriq LaSalle. His psychotic performance was beyond disturbing. Anyway, this is one of the better horror-in-the-psych ward movies. The dialogue is realistic. And the patients in this hospital provide plenty of entertainment with their antics. Look for Sinbad to pull off a tolerable role as an orderly. (Yes, Sinbad of the hit 80's sitcom ,"A Different World").

Session 9 (R-2001): "...not for the Weak or the Wounded..."

Independent
If you're looking for the type of horror that settles under your skin slowly--then see this movie! We get to see a group of excavators working in an abandoned mental asylum. Each worker has his own personal demons, which are touched on sufficiently in the film. What draws viewers in, however –is the sick attachment to the place, that each of them develop over a period of time.

Open Water (R-2004): The Best Bland Movie Ever Made

Independent
When a young couple scuba-diving on a Caribbean vacation, get stranded at sea with just their scuba gear for comfort, terror unfolds in this incredibly realistic film called OPEN WATER. This movie provides an "un-stylized" portrayal of an extremely frightening situation.

City of God (R-2002): Makes "Boyz in da Hood" look like "Toy Story"

Independent
While watching City of God, there are two things that may slip to the back of one's mind: 1) This film is incredibly violent. 2) There are subtitles. Other than that, one can expect to become completely and utterly engrossed in this true story about a young photographer who was able to document some of Rio's most violent druglords of all time.

High Tension (Unrated-2005) : For True Horror Lovers

Independent
Trailers for this film were misleading. The shots would have viewers assume that High Tension is like a multi-zillion other slasher flicks. So I was left uninspired---that is until I actually rented the movie.
