Vision of Escaflowne
Vision of Escaflowne tells of Hitomi Kanzaki's story after she is magically transported to another world Gaea. From Gaea she sees both the Earth and the Moon in her skies.
At the start of the story, Hitomi is just a normal girl on Earth whose fortune telling has a high accuracy rate. Until the day that she sees a vision of a boy her age fighting a dragon. When she attempts to help him, she winds up being transported to Gaea from when the boy came. The boy, Van Fanel is actually a Prince and he was sent to slay a dragon as part of Fanelia's Rite of Ascension to the Kingship.
On the day of Van's crowning, Fanelia is attacked by invisible Guymelefs, robots piloted by men. Miraculously, Hitomi is able to see the invisible Guymelefs and guides Van in his fight. In the end, they are overwhelmed and Fanelia destroyed. Van escapes with Hitomi aboard Escaflowne, the Guymelef which can only be piloted by the King of Fanelia.
The two end up at the borders of Asturia where they meet Allen Schezar. When their enemies pursue them, they learn that their enemies are from the Zaibach empire and they are bent on conquest of Gaea. Allen helps them, only to have the King of Asturia betray them in order not to anger the Zaibach.
As Van and Hitomi continue to escape from the Zaibach, they are helped by those they meet like Allen, Princess Millerna, Prince Chid of Freid and more. Both Van and Hitomi grow stronger through their battles with the Zaibach and Hitomi becomes indispensable to Van in his battles with the Zaibach. Hitomi also helps to bring about a reconciliation between Van and his older brother, Folken who had been misled and betrayed Fanelia by helping the Zaibach.
The ending of Escaflowne always leaves me feeling a bit sad. It is the power of Van and Hitomi's love which finally ends the war and saves Gaea from emulating Atlantis's fate, yet they 2 must forever be parted as Hitomi returns to Earth. However, as Van tells Hitomi in the end. They'll always be able to meet because of the power of their wishes. Hitomi and Van remains one of my favourite anime couples. Both are strong characters and Hitomi saves Van as many times as Van saves her. The story is suitably exciting too, without turning maudlin.
