Review:

As Good As It Gets is a charmingly sweet comedy about a grouchy writer with obsessive compulsive disorder Melvin Udall (Jack Nicholson) whom political correctness has passed by. He doesn't like the neighbours in his apartment block and they don't like him. But little by little his sweet, caring side is revealed and love is found in the most unlikely place.

Jack Nicholson is at his best in the role of the frustrated writer and the supporting cast only add to the warmth of this film's heart. Carol (Helen Hunt) plays a waitress that Melvin has become fond of, if only for the preciseness of his routine to be fully met. Everyday he goes into his local cafe with his own knife, fork and plate and orders the same thing, just as his routine requires. But when her son's condition gets worse Melvin has to act fast and the kind act leads to a deeper friendship between the waitress and the writer.

Soon another of Melvin's neighbours (Greg Kinnear) needs his help after he is attacked in his own home and the three of them take a road trip.

Wonderfully acted (Best Actor, Jack Nicholson and Best Actress Helen Hunt both Oscars and Golden Globes) this sweet and sharply written comedy will bring a smile and a tear to the eye of even the hardest hearted person.

The DVD features include director's commentary (Frank Oz), theatrical trailers and filmographies, 9/10 for the movie 4/10 for the extras.
