Rocket Science
It isn't often that you find a movie like Rocket Science. This above all is a movie that doesn't spoon feed you cliche, though it has plenty of opportunity to do so.
The set up for Rocket Science is simple enough. Hal Hefner, played by Reece Thompson, is a stutterer who joins the debate team because Ginny, played by Anna Kendrick asks him to. He falls in love with her and as you near the halfway point of the movie you are convinced that this is going to be another teenage coming of age story where the underdog learns to overcome and wins the big debate.
I won't ruin the twists for you, but that isn't what this movie is about. This movie is about the struggle, about learning how to deal with people and limitations not about winning. This is most clear in the character of Ginny who will do anything to win and even when she wins isn't happy.
I hope to see more from Jeffrey Blitz because he was able to make a movie that felt like it had the production value of any mainstream movie while using the advantages of the independent movies and avoidid their pitfalls.
